Anna buys a house!

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Academy Award-winning actress Anna Paquin and two relatives have paid $1,575,000 for a restored home in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills that was built in 1938.

In a Big Time Listings exclusive, we can report on the purchase by Paquin, 25, and her brother and sister-in-law, which closed on July 18 and was recorded on July 24, according to public records.

Features in the traditional-style home, which is behind the gates of Hollywoodland in the Beachwood Village area of the Hollywood Hills, include four bedrooms, three baths, a gourmet kitchen, a spiral staircase, hardwood floors, all-new systems, marble baths, fireplaces, a new roof, a barbecue and a two-car garage, according to listing information. The house sits on a 0.22-acre lot, according to public records. It had been on the market for $1,849,000, according to listing information.

Given that the actress long has been a resident of New York, it’s unclear whether the actress simply is helping her brother and sister-in-law with the purchase, or whether she intends to crash at the home when she’s in L.A.

Emmy-Nominated Anna Paquin Recalls Awfulness of Oscar Win

Anna Paquin plans to be in L.A. for the Sept. 16 Emmys, but gives the impression she’s not particularly looking forward to the event.

The 25-year-old actress, who earned an Oscar at age 11 for “The Piano,” is up for Emmy honors for her role as Elaine Goodale in HBO’s “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.” She doesn’t expect to win and doesn’t even plan to prepare an acceptance speech.

“Why set yourself up for disappointment?” says Paquin, who recalls how it felt when she was called to the stage to accept her “Piano” Oscar. “I was terrified. I was a very shy, very, very young 11. I don’t think I had ever seen so many people at one time and to have them all sitting there waiting for me to say something … It was awful.”

She doesn’t think the Emmys will be any better. “It will probably be more fun to just sit in the audience and clap for the winner. It’s nice to be acknowledged — that’s enough for me.”

She goes on to say she hasn’t yet seen the Emmy-nominated work of the competing actresses (Greta Scacchi for “Broken Trail,” Samantha Morton for “Longford,” Toni Collette for “Tsunami, The Aftermath” and Judy Davis for “The Starter Wife”). She notes, “It’s odd that I’m being honored for television, because I have so little connection to the medium. I don’t even own a TV, though I plan to someday get cable.”

That would be nice, real nice, because she’s going to have a firm attachment to cable soon, real soon — as star of Alan Ball’s “True Blood,” a series set in small-town Louisiana, about vampires who co-exist with humans by drinking synthetic blood. In the HBO series, which starts production late next month in L.A., Paquin will play a waitress who winds up falling for a vampire played by Stephen Moyer. “I’m extraordinarily excited. It’s really cool and funny and done like no one does but Alan Ball,” she says of the creator of the wonderful, quirky “Six Feet Under.”

True Blood picked up!

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Alan Ball is back in HBO’s court, as the paycabler has officially picked up the vampire series “True Blood.”

Ball, who created the hit “Six Feet Under” for HBO, will exec produce and showrun “True Blood,” which is based on the novel series “Southern Vampire” from author Charlaine Harris.

Net is still ironing out an episodic order and airdate, but “True Blood” is expected to go into production this fall. Ball, who wrote and directed the pilot, already has penned several more episodes.

” ‘True Blood’ proves that Alan continues as a master of his craft,” said HBO entertainment prexy Carolyn Strauss.

Ball first started working on the project in October 2005, when he signed a two-year overall pact with HBO. The project was eventually rolled to this year, and was shot earlier this summer with stars Anna Paquin, Ryan Kwanten, Sam Trammell, Stephen Moyer and Brook Kerr.

Set in small-town Louisiana, series follows the world of vampires, who are able to co-exist with humans by drinking a Japanese-manufactured synthetic blood. While spooky, the show also contains a dose of humor alongside the horror.

“Charlaine has created such a rich environment that’s very funny and at the same time very scary,” Ball told Daily Variety after first selling the project in 2005. “I bought the book on impulse and I just couldn’t put it down.”

Paquin plays Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress who winds up falling for the vampire Bill Compton (played by Moyer) and who has powers of her own. Carrie Preston and Michael Raymond-James round out the cast.

Ball recently directed the film “Nothing is Private.” Ball’s Your Face Goes Here Entertainment shingle will produce “True Blood” with HBO.
