Anna Paquin film to be shot in Sarasota
October 10th, 2011 | Free Ride, News | No Comments

From Bradenton Herald:
The independent film “Free Ride,” starring Anna Paquin and Drea de Matteo, will be shooting on closed sets later this month through the end of November.

The movie takes place in late 1970s Florida. After fleeing an abusive relationship, mom turns to the marijuana trade to support her daughters, ages 15 and 7. It’s based on the real-life story of writer/director Shana Sosin, the youngest of the siblings.

Paquin plays Sosin’s mother, Christina. At age 11, Paquin won the Academy Award in 1994 for Best Supporting Actress for “The Piano.” In 2009, she won a Golden Globe for playing Sookie Stackhouse on the HBO television drama “True Blood.”

“My mother was a very vibrant character and very good at surviving,” Sosin said Sunday afternoon while location scouting in Sarasota. “There’s something very raw and real about Anna’s performances and person; she’s retained that rawness my mother had.”

De Matteo, who won an Emmy Award in 2004 for playing Adriana La Cerva on “The Sopranos,” has been cast as Sandy in “Free Ride.”

“She’s the one who gets my mom into the marijuana trade,” Sosin said.

Liana Liberato, best known for her work in the 2010 Clive Owen movie “Trust,” plays the writer/director’s older sister.

“This movie is about a single mother who’s uneducated and doing the best she can, and she’s not your typical drug dealer,” Sosin said. “It’s also my homage to the end of innocence in America as well as a love letter to my sister and my mother.”

In addition to the stars, the filmmaker wants locals in “Free Ride.”

“We’re looking for people who are rough around the edges with long hair, very tan locals,” she said. “The kind of guys who would work fishing boats and bikers with handlebar mustaches.”

Individuals interested in being cast as extras should email icastingextras@gmail.com.

The crew is also seeking boats, cars and homes to use in the movie.

“As a small budget film we’re so dependent on the kindness of the community,” said Wendy Williams, line producer on the picture. “We’re looking for period boats and cars of the early to late 1970s and period homes from the late 1970s that have not been updated.”

Interested parties can email freeridemovie@gmail.com.

“Free Ride” marks the first full-length movie featuring major stars for Sosin.

She comes out of the acclaimed, Los Angeles-based experimental theater troupe “The Actors’ Gang,” cofounded by Tim Robbins. Her filmmaking credits include the acclaimed 2010 short film “The Convention of Dying.” As an actor she has appeared in numerous films as well as the television series “Cold Case.”

“I come out of the theater and I’m a strong supporter of theater and community theater,” Sosin said. “And the community theater that exists here is great.”

“Free Ride” is being produced by Susan Dynner, whose credits include co-producer on the 2005 Sundance Special Jury Prize winner film “Brick.” British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award winner Cerise Hallam-Larkin is also a producer.

The crew will be using facilities provided by the Sarasota Film Festival.

“Shana and her crew are exactly the kind of talented, creative people we want to work in this area,” said Mark Famiglio, executive director of SFF. “They represent the new wave of independent filmmaking and exceptional storytelling.”

Anna Covers In New York Magazine
October 3rd, 2011 | Press | No Comments

Anna is featured on the cover of the October issue of In New York Magazine.

From In New York:

Like the two vampires who vie for her blood and affection on HBO’s True Blood (2008-present), Anna Paquin is eternally young, at least judging from the way she looks in her new movie, Margaret. That’s because the film—about a 17-year-old New York City high-school girl haunted by the thought that she may have inadvertently caused a fatal accident when an MTA bus hits a pedestrian—was filmed in 2005, shelved due to legal entanglements and recently released.

“I was reaching my expiration date to be plausibly playing a teenager,” says Paquin. “I was a very young-looking 23-year-old at the time. There’s something to be said for casting people who are the age of the person they’re portraying, but sometimes you can bring more to it by having life experience.”

Now 29 years old, Paquin was born Anna Helene Paquin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on Jul. 24, 1982, to physical-education teacher Brian Paquin and English teacher Mary Paquin. She grew up in New Zealand, burst onto the scene playing Holly Hunter’s angry daughter in The Piano (1993) and, at 11, became the second youngest person ever to win an Academy Award. Two years later, her parents divorced, and she moved to Los Angeles, where she landed roles in Fly Away Home (1996), Jane Eyre (1996), Hurlyburly (1998) and A Walk on the Moon (1999), among other films.

After high-school graduation, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by moving to New York City and enrolling in Columbia University. “I visited here when I was 12 years old and decided I wanted to live here once I grew up,” she explains. “I went to Columbia and, well, I started doing a lot of theater. Philip Seymour Hoffman was directing an Off-Broadway play and I convinced him to hire me. I really enjoyed the hours and hours of rehearsal, discussing everything about every scene … One thing led to another, and six plays later, I hadn’t really gone back to school. I was getting a different kind of education.” Plus, she was building a résumé that included Off-Broadway plays and hit films, including Almost Famous (2000), X-Men (2000), 25th Hour (2002) and The Squid and the Whale (2005).

“I actually still had an apartment up on the Upper West Side, because I hadn’t quite made the complete commitment to not go back to school,” says Paquin, nostalgically recalling the period of her life when she was a local resident and was cast in the dramatic, filmed-on-location Margaret. “We did a lot of shooting on the Upper West Side and interior filming out in Queens,” she remembers. “I especially loved the East Village and the West Village. I used to say, ‘You’ll have to move my corpse to get me out of New York.’”

Margaret Is In Theatres TODAY
September 30th, 2011 | Margaret | 1 Comment

Margaret is out today in New York and Los Angeles for an exclusive engagement at the Landmark Theatres in both cities. The film will be in San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia and San Diego on October 7th. If you’re in either city, go support Anna and the film.

ETA: I’ve just returned from seeing the film this evening and it was worth the wait, Anna was fantastic in the film.

Whilst I don’t normally post reviews on the site, The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a nice list of what critics are saying about Anna’s performance in the film.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

The Hollywood Reporter’s Sheri Linden wrote that the actress is convincing in the role and gives credit to the director.

“Lonergan has a sure touch with actors, and his portrait of upper-middle-class, intellectual New Yorkers never feels false, even if the dramatic impact remains more theoretical than felt,” she wrote.

The Associated Press critic Jake Coyle was more effusive in his praise of the actress.

“Paquin is exceptional,” he wrote. “Even if she hadn’t become a star from True Blood since Margaret was filmed, this performance — searching, ferocious — would have done the trick.”

Time’s Mary Pols echoed that sentiment.

“Paquin is spectacular,” she wrote. “The character is almost too precocious, prone to dropping George Bernard Shaw phrases into her speech — ‘Not that I want to make this woman’s death into my own personal moral gymnasium.’Yet in Paquin’s hands, Lisa is completely believable, and the realization of the potential the actress showed in supporting roles in 25th Hour and The Squid and the Whale.”

Rex Reed of the New York Observer also had praise for the actress, if not the movie itself.

“Anna Paquin delivers a very fine performance in the very odd starring role of a very bewildering film,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times film critic Betsy Sharkey had a hard time believing Paquin in the role.
“Paquin, as good as she is, is such an old soul that it’s hard to buy her as a teenager, even a precocious one,” she wrote.
