Paquin and Meyer a natural fit
Chemistry and talent make Blue State work

With so much of young Hollywood seeming to go off the rails these days, it’s nice to talk to people like Breckin Meyer and Anna Paquin, two talented people who are using their influence and abilities to make films they really care about.

BostonNOW: Blue State tells the story of two people on opposite sides of just about every issue you can imagine sharing a car ride to Canada. What was your first reaction to reading Marshall Lewy’s script?

Anna Paquin: I was looking for something to produce with my brother, Andrew, and this felt like something we should do. The story really moved me. And it’s funny, too. Most good humor has an element of truth in it, which this does. It’s absurd to watch people get up on their soapbox and it’s fun to see them get knocked down.

Breckin Meyer: I liked that it was grounded. I’ve done a lot of high concept wacky comedies and this was grounded in reality. It’s still funny and sweet, but the story is string. It took me to places I never expected it to.

BN: Chemistry between actors is an elusive thing. Why do you think you two work so well together onscreen?

AP: you never know if it will happen. You hope it will work out when first meet people, but we’ve all seen films where it doesn’t and its awkward for everyone. Breckin and I really clicked so it was easy and thankfully it works on the screen. That’s just my opinion. Breckin might hate me.

BM: She’s right. I do hate her. No it was great. Don’t let her hear this, but Anna spoiled me for other actors. We got so comfortable with each other so quickly that we were able to push each other’s buttons in a scene and not worry about offending each other. I like watching these characters on screen.
