Anna Paquin is a Canadian born, New Zealand actress who you may be familiar with as ‘Rogue’ from the X-Men franchise. Although she gained fame as an Award winning child actress for her role in the movie ‘The Piano’, she has a lot more to her name and credit than we may think. Here are some of her reel life roles.
- The Piano
Released in 1993, the Piano was a critically acclaimed movie which starred Anna Paquin as Flora McGrath, the young daughter of mute piano player Ada McGrath. This was Anna’s first acting role but she shone in her role as the young child and eventually won the Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actress at the age of 11, making her the second youngest person to receive it. The movie itself was also a commercial success, garnering $140 million in sales over a budget of $7 million. This signified the start of young Anna’s acting career.
- Jane Eyre
Anna played the role of young Jane Eyre, the young orphan child who grows into a young lady and finds an affinity with her employer Mr. Rochester. This 1996 feature film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë and was Anna’s first role after The Piano.
She played the role of Rogue, a mutant superheroine that has the power to absorb the life force and mutant abilities of anyone she touches. This makes her limits her physical contact with everyone around her. Rogue can be identified by the striking white streak that runs through her hair. She played a very substantial role in all the X-Men movies and had a pivotal role in the first movie X-Men. It is probably this movie series that has made her most familiar to her audiences as a mainstream actress.
- True Blood
Her first TV role, this show ran for 7 seasons and it was on the sets of this show that she met her future husband, Stephen Moyer. The show was based on the series of novels ‘the southern Vampire Mysteries’ written by Charlaine Harris which is set in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Cast as Sookie Stackhouse, the main protagonist of the show, this series aired on the HBO network. The series revolves around her character that is a telepathic human-faerie hybrid also known as a ‘halfling’.
The town she lives and works in is filled with vampires, shape shifters and other normal characters like her womanizing brother, a drug dealer and more. Extensive promotions were done before the show was even launch, with a beverage of the same name being released, documentaries to build the hype and much more. Anna won the Golden Globe at the 66th Golden Globe Awards for her role in this show after the first season and also won the Saturn Award at the 13th Satellite Awards.
- The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler
This was a CBS TV film that was based on the book ‘Mother of the Children of the Holocaust: The Irena Sendler Story’ written by Anna Mieszkowska. Anna played the pivotal role of Irena Sendler, a polish woman who was hailed as a hero of the Holocaust. This 2009 movie was made in Latvia and was a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation for the network. The story of the Polish woman is one as a hero – she is responsible for saving the lives of thousands of Jewish children, saving them from a life condemned to a life in the ghettos and concentration camps and an eventual death through gas. The movie was released by CBS in mid April 2009 and later in June was released to DVD.
